Allergy is not the only cause
Doctors frequently observe allergy-like symptoms, but a corresponding allergy test remains negative. These non-allergic inflammations of the mucous membranes can have different causes, including metabolic disorders or impairments affecting the nerves in the nasal mucous membrane.
Hormonal changes during pregnancy or taking hormonal preparations can also cause the typical symptoms of a blocked nose. It is not uncommon for certain drugs or the inhalation of irritating gases or vapours to upset the regulatory mechanisms of the mucous membranes in the nose.
Medication is available for the effective treatment of allergic or inflammatory swelling of the nasal mucous membranes. They include modern anti-inflammatory preparations such as corticosteroid nasal sprays. A beneficial support to this treatment is to irrigate the nose with a saline solution.
