Questions by sufferers, replies by experts
Question: Why is a blocked nose more common when lying down than when standing up?
Answer by Dr. Melik: Because blood supply to the mucous membranes in the nose is better when the head is low; for that reason, they swell up more.
Question: Why are the right and left nostril blocked alternately?
Answer by Dr. Melik: The nose operates on a cycle, and blood supply to the mucous membranes alternates from one side to the other. In certain cases, this can lead to one side of the nose becoming blocked.
Question: Why does my nose drip when I come out of the cold into a warm environment?
Answer by Dr. Melik: In very sensitive mucous membranes, a change in temperature can trigger an excessive reaction inside the nose, leading to the generation of an aqueous nasal discharge.
Question: Is it not dangerous to use a locally applied cortisone nasal spray over an extended period?
Answer by Dr. Caversaccioo: No, not if used at the correct dose and applied as described in the Patient information. However, in some cases, treatment may result in the nose becoming dry.
